A Day in the Life @ New Chapter

DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE
I do my best to propagate an environment of learning and knowledge-sharing. I work with departments and employees throughout New Chapter® to ensure everyone has the training they need to do their jobs. I also work with individuals on their professional development plans. In most cases, I figure out the training or development plan and help find ways to make it happen. In some cases, I do the training myself. I also manage various learning opportunities around the company, consult on or co-develop presentations used for training, and recruit and train other employees so they may give their own workshops on topics of value to the company.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS CAREER/POSITION OR DID IT CHOOSE YOU?
I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. I spent twelve years, including my first eight years at New Chapter, as an Excel analyst, but I’m a teacher by nature. In 2012 it became clear to me that there was a great training need within the company, and that I had the right combination of teaching experience, company knowledge, and organizational perspective to develop a program, so I pitched my ideas. Our new VP of Human Resources realized that she could use someone to partner with her to create a robust training program for New Chapter. I left my financial and sales spreadsheets and began a new exciting journey. Teaching once more, I felt like I had come home.
WHAT KEEPS YOU DOING THIS JOB (aka Why do you bleed purple)?
On any given day, I do so many things that I feel passionately about. I teach workshops, consult with departments about their training needs, coach individuals through career development planning, sit in on brainstorming sessions, and produce training videos—all to develop creative solutions for learning needs and cultural support. I always get to work with fabulously talented and passionate people. New Chapter encourages and supports a culture of growth, sharing, and challenge, and it’s great to be a part of that every day.
WHAT SETS NEW CHAPTER APART FROM OTHER PLACES YOU’VE WORKED?
The biggest thing that sets New Chapter apart from other places I’ve worked is our focus on our mission: to Deliver the Wisdom of Nature, thus relieving suffering and promoting optimal health. New Chapter’s founders remain visible and active in the business, and we are all constantly reminded of why we are here and what we are doing including nurturing and sustaining Mother Earth and honoring and rewarding personal growth.
New Chapter isn’t about profits or growth for growth’s sake. When we say we plan to grow our business over the next few years, it’s because growing our business means that many more people seeking health will be helped by our products. We say we weigh the health of people and planet in all of our business decisions. and so we donate prenatal vitamins to birthing centers in Bali and partner with farms in India to help convert them to sustainable organic farms. We say we believe in the importance of balance and rejuvenation so, for example, we close our business on a summer day for a company-wide field day complete with hot dogs, water balloons, blind folds, and marshmallow tossing. Every company has a mission statement, but how many have a mission so worth following?
HOW HAS NEW CHAPTER CREATED A “NEW CHAPTER” IN YOUR LIFE?
In the last ten years I’ve worked at New Chapter, I have had many new chapters in my life, from moving to a town of fewer than a thousand people and buying a house to getting married to having children. More than anything, New Chapter allows me to love coming to work every day, energized and enlivened by the people and our mission, and that’s always a great chapter to be living.
