An interesting aside: A few years ago, New Chapter principals met with Philip Morris executives in their Marlboro Man Conference Room. They were discussing some exciting new research that was slated for publication June 2003 in the UK refereed Journal Pharmacy and Pharmacology. The research focused on a turmeric-based product called Smokeshield. The human study showed that Smokeshield actually protected subjects from the deleterious effects of smoke and smoking. As Newmark and Schulick explained in the meeting, “We’re in same industry—we’re both delivering herbal products. However, you formulate for flavor, we formulate to heal people.” The tobacco problem is essentially an herbal problem and requires herbal answers, herbal antidotes. The tobacco industry uses the wrong herbs for the wrong reasons in the wrong way.
