New Chapter, Inc. Brings Tech Innovation as well as Time-Tested Tradition to the Natural Foods Industry

Sep. 22, 2003

BRATTLEBORO, VT, September 22, 2003—New Chapter, Inc. (www.newchapter.info) is driving innovation within the natural foods industry. Specializing in whole food organic herbal and nutritional non-GMO supplements, New Chapter source much of their organic ginger and turmeric from Luna Nueva, a sustainable ginger and turmeric estate near the Children’s Rainforest and volcano in Costa Rica.

The company has taken the inexact “kitchen cuisine science” of herbal extraction to a pharmaceutical level through a process called supercritical extraction, which is devoid of harmful solvents like hexane and acetone (long-time standards within the supplement industry!). New Chapter’s methods have inspired confidence in completely solvent-free herbal extracts. Supercritical extraction provides perfect predictability and regularity in working with whole plant compounds. The process has been used in the brewing industry in Germany for years and also in making fine perfumes.

Manufacturing pharmaceuticals is relatively easy. It’s simplifying complex matter into “dumbed down” single molecules. The real challenge is in working with the complexity of whole botanicals—taking an herb and producing a supplement that delivers precisely what the label says it does.

New Chapter says that a complex problem requires complex answers. You can’t “shortcut” Nature and get products that maintain the bounty of Nature’s intelligence. According to New Chapter principals Tom Newmark and Paul Schulick, pharmaceuticals are vestiges of a distinctly 20th century approach to Nature that believes it’s OK to grab molecular fragments without maintaining or respecting the complexity of the whole food. They think that outmoded notion is tragically near-sighted and filled with hubris. New Chapter has risen to the challenge and created important changes within the industry and in what consumers can expect from organic supplements.

An interesting aside: A few years ago, New Chapter principals met with Philip Morris executives in their Marlboro Man Conference Room. They were discussing some exciting new research that was slated for publication June 2003 in the UK refereed Journal Pharmacy and Pharmacology. The research focused on a turmeric-based product called Smokeshield. The human study showed that Smokeshield actually protected subjects from the deleterious effects of smoke and smoking. As Newmark and Schulick explained in the meeting, “We’re in same industry—we’re both delivering herbal products. However, you formulate for flavor, we formulate to heal people.” The tobacco problem is essentially an herbal problem and requires herbal answers, herbal antidotes. The tobacco industry uses the wrong herbs for the wrong reasons in the wrong way.
