New Chapter, Inc. Supports Nation of Vanuatu with Voluntary Compliance with the Convention on Biological Diversity

Jun. 6, 2003

Brattleboro, VT (June 6, 2003) – New Chapter and its True Tamanu® Oil partners, IBC Vanuatu and Medicine Hunter, Inc., have committed to act in voluntary compliance with the Convention on Biological Diversity. This treaty, created at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, established three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of genetic resources. New Chapter’s True Tamanu Oil is one of the first products sold in the United States to comply voluntarily with the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Specifically, New Chapter, Inc. has employed all means possible to ensure that the harvesting of tamanu nuts and the subsequent processing of oil is performed in a manner that does not harm the environment or the tree from which True Tamanu Oil is derived. New Chapter’s compliance with CBD means that its supplier partners are providing a fair wage to native people in the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu who harvest tamanu oil for New Chapter, as well as a significant royalty from sales back to those people.

Since 1983, New Chapter, Inc. has created more than 90 high quality vitamin and herbal dietary supplements that are sold at natural food stores and pharmacies throughout the world. The company is headquartered in Brattleboro, VT and San Ysidro des Peñas Blancas, Costa Rica, where it grows certified organic ginger and turmeric. New Chapter’s organic spice farm in Costa Rica is located near the Children’s International Rainforest in proximity to the highly active Arenal Volcano, and the farm has been recognized as a world model for sustainable organic rainforest agriculture.
