Committed to Biodynamics

What is Biodynamic Agriculture?
Biodynamic agriculture takes full advantage of the complex relationship between the farmer, soil, plants, animals, sun, moon and tides. It recognizes the farm as a closed, self-nourishing system, often using livestock to work the earth instead of machinery.

There are several levels, or ‘grades’, of organic farming:
Organic
Sustainable
Biodynamic
Demeter-certified

We’re proud that Luna Nueva, our organic farm in Costa Rica, has achieved Demeter certification -- the highest level of organic farming in the world and a true testament to our organic mission.

At Luna Nueva, biodynamic farming increases the farm’s biodiversity and protects the natural environment. Gentle oxen allow us to avoid the pollutants created by tractors and other farm equipment while goats happily clear rested fields for planting. Anteaters, not pesticides, help protect the ginger from pests. And three to four hundred varieties of butterflies, not to mention numerous monkeys, provide endless entertainment for the “kids” of all our co-habitating species.

Demeter International is the largest certification organization for biodynamic agriculture and the oldest traditional organic certification in Europe.

Demeter certification is regarded as the highest grade of organic farming in the world and the most difficult to come by because it requires biodiversity and ecosystem preservation, soil husbandry, livestock integration, prohibition of genetically engineered organisms and labor-intensive practices that treat the farm as a living holistic organism.
